Golgotha Falls is a city of the far future on Earth as 95% of the world is uninhabitable. There are two classes of citizens: humans and gods. Actually, the gods are not so much gods but possibly long-lived genetic constructs that are based on legendary god types. Which is why you can have angels like Michael mixing with the Norse pantheon. One can compare names and abilities but they aren't the real thing.
There's also an uneasy alliance with humans divided as to who they support and serve. The focus of these stories is that of the spider-goddess, the Lady Genevieve Desdemona, someone whom you shouldn't get on the wrong side. Come to that, you don't really want to be on her good side as she makes a meal of her lovers...literally.
The story unfolds in sixteen tales, briefly showing a little of Golgotha Falls and its sub-districts and then the attempts to kill Desdemona by creatures far worse than herself. Giving away too much here would spoil some serious enjoyment.
This is a densely packed story where you really can't afford to keep your eyes from the pages for the detail it carries. It's also very well-written mosaic building up on itself into a cohesive whole. Just for good measure, author George Udenkwo puts in a tale covering Desdemona's tailors, clearly showing that there is a lot to be had out of this reality. In some respects, it reminds me of some of Roger Zelazny's mythological material but with a lot more depth. Desdemona and her hence...er...demi-dog god Djoba are fascinating creations, as indeed are the other characters.
Whether you would want to live in Golgotha Falls and its totalitarian regimes depends a lot on who you worship...literally. This is not a safe world and I'm sure Udenkwo is planning to show more of this reality in successive books that is going to have you thoroughly hooked. Oddly gothic mixed in with bits of horror and Science Fiction so should please everyone who wants an intelligent read.
