I have to confess its rather unusual reading the second volume of a graphic novel without seeing the first but, whatever, the link doesn't make this a hard book to follow.
There is a tradition with the Justice League Of America series to shake and mix with the earlier Justice Society Of America once a year giving an opportunity for the Silver Age and modern day versions of these super-heroes to get together to sort out a crisis.
In this case, not only do we have both of these teams but also members of the Legion Of Super-Heroes from the 31st century. The only problem is that they don't know who they are, have different alter-egos and have absolutely no idea what they are there for until some words of Interlac, the language spoken in the future, finally brings Karate Kid back to normal and through him, the teams divide up into smaller groups to track the other six members down. The mission is discovered when Superman recognises the lightning rods that are used to resurrect dead people but they have no idea who it is. No. It's not Lightning Lad.
I'm not going to spoil that for you neither. Most of this plot is littered with spoilers. If you're an LSH fan, you're going to love the references to what the Legion flight ring is made of and even their Espionage Squad, which these members aren't by the way. It's a shame that the LSH members aren't included on the cover by Alex Ross but I guess that would give the game away. It is nice to see the link of Superman as a boy linked to the LSH has been resurrected. Something I always thought was something that had been over-looked with the 'Crisis On Infinity Earths' back in the 80s. With Karate Kid back and Duo Damsel as Triplicate Girl, how much of future history has been changed will have to be covered at a different time.
About the only thing I still find odd is all the JLA and JSA referring to each other by their Christian names. All right, that's probably OK in private but surely a matter of a security issue out on missions. Anyone with eavesdropping spyware would have all their identities sorted out in no time at all by the way they behave.
I should point out this story was originally printed in JLA # 0, 8-12 and JSA # 5-6. To balance the page count, three other JLA adventures were added, including one where the team is re-forming plus several pin-ups. The art on the whole is great. If anything, I was thrown a little by Gene Ha's grainy art in 'Walls', one of the extra stories, but it made some sense given the subject matter.
This book is going to please fans of the JLA, JSA and LSH so you'd better get your copy today.
