Reading this book, I can't help but feel that artist Tom Kidd is a little crazy. Then again, aren't we all? All right, so he's an artist and eccentricity should be accepted as part and parcel of his trade. This also reflects in his art, both commercial and self-indulgence which there is plenty of in this book. His art also needs to be looked at a lot to pick out all the detail. Kidd's is not one you can merely glance at and move on, he likes to play with form with a gentle slap to ensure that you're paying attention.

We might not have seen that much of his book cover work in the UK but the range he's covered, including the design work for Disney's film 'Treasure World' and books 'The Three Musketeers' and 'War Of The Worlds' display interesting contrasts. He also likes to play with his identity and has work come out in different styles and names as well. Doing the standard page flick, there's a definite liking for earth colours and muted reds. Kidd doesn't play much with gaudy blues or use a bright palate although when he does you wonder how you missed them. Don't take this as a reason to dislike his work, this brings out things differently to other artists that makes him distinctive. After studying this book, you should be able to pick his work out from the others with ease.

This is a fine book to own and study and makes for an interesting read as well. Tom Kidd is clearly a tad demented in his own way and his aborted attempts at self brain surgery shouldn't be tried at home. In the meantime, enjoy this book and hope his next book project gets off the ground.
