This is very much a first for our review column because we don't normally go after toys for children let alone for adults. Its more to do with lack of space to keep them really. Then again, I would hardly call this lady a toy or something you want to give to your kids to play around with either. We're talking Airwolf, a mach-one chopper that can shoot your butt off and the model that does more than resemble it. This lady actually works.
All right, it doesn't actually fly but with two AA batteries plugged in, the top rotor and tail rotors spin only don't do it near your TV cos it gives off a lot of screen static. Your computer monitor, at least as a demo by mine goes, is perfectly OK so as long as it has a flat surface, you can have it looking down on you. For preference, I would stand it on its base rather than on its retractable legs mostly cos the weight has it tilt back although I'm sure a little plasticine in the cockpit - doors that open - may compensate for that.
The Airwolf model arrives in bits and the instructions are easy to work out from Japanese and English and diagrams. It's just a matter of screwing on the top rotor and deciding whether you want it to look like a sheep, with weapon hatches closed or like the wolf with them out ready to fire. I don't think it will take too many guesses as to your selection.
The attention to detail is astounding when even the tiny rear starburst hatches can be opened. Other hatches can be opened but as there's little behind them, it looks more like a convenience of manufacturer as much as anything.
I should point out that Aoshima have this model in three versions. The normal which I've been describing and two alternate paint jobs, a deluxe using black instead of grey and a weathered look with no difference in price. I have a suspicion that the normal version is the preferred one cos I don't think Hawke and Santini would leave the lady get dirty.
If you loved 'Airwolf' as a series and want some serious hardware model to have around the house then this one should be on your buying list. Kudos to Aoshima for such a beautiful model.
