Several thoughts went through my head when I looked at this book, mostly related to the cover and price and whether I would buy if I saw on a book shelf. As I was told it was a limited edition and as such unlikely to be seen in a bookshop, you might not either. Any dependency would be based on whether or not you bought Barry Hoffman's previous three 'Eyes' series books featuring vigilante Shara Farris, who in the other books, which I haven't read, killed off a series of felons to hide killing her abusive brother. Shara also has a habit of have their eyes tattooed on her breast to remind herself of her action and even though she doesn't admit it, tends to come to the rescue of people she likes. Chief amongst these is young Renee, rescued from being an outsider at a home for abused wives home which she then fostered. Shara is also friends with a journalist. Deidre Caffrey, who when murdered, finds herself looking after her drug-addict sister Denise with the instruction to get her clean before she can inherit her money. Into this tangle, is the one Science Fiction element, a forest that can cleanse the soul which is used, as I understand in the books, a lot more.
In many respects, this is very much a detective-type book as the plot intermingles around all the main characters as they go about their lives. I found it relatively easy to read without reference to the other books, even if I tended to find Shara and her associates odd in how they get away with what they do. In fact, unless you study the story closely, you could be equally forgiven to realise that a murder was actually being solved since many of the elements aren't drawn together until the end. Hoffman tends to move along the lines of 'urban horror' and seems to have a fan in Ramsey Campbell but whether you would find this frightening or not will be up to you to decide.
