I have to say from the start this book is not targeted at anyone with anything beyond a rudimentary knowledge of Science Fiction movies but more for the novice who wants to demonstrate a little information to their friends. Nothing is inaccurate in these pages just that I wished occasionally there was a little more information. I had the opportunity to talk to its writer, John Grant, who told me that I hit the problem on the head here and it was more a problem of slimming the content down to fit publisher requirements as this is part of a series covering various subjects.
The book divides into seven sections looking at key directors, the classic SF movies, the sexier ones and animation before the lousy ones and the awards they've all been given. I did find it odd that Grant skipped over 'Terminator' in preference to the sequel and nary a word the second and third of the original 'Star Wars' films when they could have been covered collectively. These really are minor quibbles considering some of the range, although quite what they will think about films from the silent era which have been lost so unable to see I don't know. Then again, I wonder if it will sink in that the 'Frankenstein' or 'Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde' films aren't actually horror but really SF. I tend to go along with Grant on the categorisation and it'll be interesting to see what he actually covers should he do a horror or fantasy version of this type of book.
I can well see this book appearing as birthday or Christmas presents to encourage an interest in teens as much as anything. All novice SF fans have to start getting their reading habit started somewhere and although this won't shake them unduly it might encourage them into greater things.
