Sookie Stackhouse must have a very patient dry-cleaner and presumably one who doesn't ask questions. There usually something pretty nasty clinging to her coat after one of her adventures. This is the fourth time we've met Sookie and she continues to attract dry-cleaning and trouble in equal measure.
She's a likeable heroine, not so brave but always with a sense of doing what's right. We'd hope to behave the same.
This time Sookie picks up a wandering Vampire. He's alone, has amnesia but he's Eric. The local club owner, the real Eric, would like very much to get a grip on Sookie but this sweet vulnerable soul is altogether a different proposition. Sookie is feeling vulnerable herself. Her undead boyfriend, Bill, is out of the picture, off on his own mission. Besides which he is an ex-boyfriend thanks to their previous adventure in 'Club Dead'.
Now it seems that Eric has been enchanted by a group of rogue witches. Not only that but Sookie's brother is in trouble. She has done her best to shield him from the unusual world she lives in but now she fears for his life. To add a little more musk to the mix, Sookie is also troubled by a rather attractive shape-changing werewolf called Alcide. She wouldn't want to ruffle his fur the wrong way either.
In between being romanced by Eric the undead and trying to work out what in Hell's name the witches want, Sookie is as dazed and confused as ever.
Charlaine Harris can be relied up to produce a fun narrative that won't overtax your brain and will entertain and amuse to the end. Most of the characterisation goes to the heroine but as it written from her point of view that's suits our own self-absorbed feelings.
Enjoyable light reading for full moons.
