Well, chums, when last we were here, Colonel Dan Dare and his intrepid crew of Digby, Professor Peabody and the Venusian Sondar were believed dead but were actually going to crash on Mercury. In their reality of 1998, things were lead melting hot on Mercury but that didn't mean there wasn't life there on the cool side of the planet or that it was prepared to rescue the crew from certain death. The Mercurians spoke in a musical key and once Peabody had sorted it out, communication became a whole lot easier. They also discovered that they weren't the only aliens on Mercury. On the other side of the planet, but not in the hottest places, was a small but industrious village run by a group of stranded Treens whom they discover are working for that big domed chappie, the Mekon. He has plans to take revenge on his fellow Treens back on Venus using Dare and company as an unwitting Judases to deliver his form of genocide there and on Earth for good measure. The Mekon is not a happy Treen and if you want to what happens, you need to delve into this book quick.

Although this could be regarded as the second part of 'The Red Moon Mystery', that story just uses it as a springboard to get Dan Dare into further bother but at the same time save Venus and Earth from more of the Mekon's deadly plans. That guy is definitely a poor loser.

The Mercurians are a definite contrast to the rather emotionless Treens. Apart from the musical language, they are strong, fast and impulsive with a great love of transport. Frank Hampton and his team must have taken great delight in bringing them to life as the accompanying 9 page interview with photographs will testify. With another couple books of Dan Dare adventures due any time soon, it's really time to feast your eyes on a space ace legend. Nostalgia rules so have a good wallow in it.
